How to Make Fabric with a Serger

Create your own fabric with a serger for a fast, easy, and strong connection. Master the flatlock stitch while joining scrap fabric to reduce waste, make your favorite fabric larger to accommodate a pattern’s minimum requirements, or simply create a piece that is truly unique to you.

Matériaux

• Denim or other apparel fabric
  • Use fabrics of a similar weight. Medium-weight fabric works best.
  • Woven or knit fabrics are recommended.
  • Do not use vinyl, leather, or pleather.
• Three cones of serger thread
  • Match the thread color to the fabric for a discreet seam.
  • Use contrasting thread for a decorative finish.

Instructions

Step 1: Set Up the Machine

Set up your machine for a 3-thread flatlock stitch:

• Remove the left needle.
• Set the machine tensions as follows:
• Left Needle: Doesn't matter (needle removed)
• Right Needle: 0
• Upper Looper: 3
• Lower Looper: 6

Tip: Try using the wrong side of a fabric to add visual interest.

Note: Always test your stitch on scraps of the same or similar fabric to perfect your stitch settings.

Step 2: Stitch the Fabric

Place the fabric pieces right sides together and stitch.

Step 3: Reveal the Flatlock Stitch

Hold both fabric pieces by the unstitched edges and gently pull them apart. This will expose the flatlock stitch.
