How to Make a Zippered Pillowcase

A zippered pillowcase is one of the most satisfying beginner sewing projects — practical, quick, and endlessly customizable. Swap covers between seasons, mix patterns across a sofa, or coordinate a whole room. Once you know how, you'll want to make them for everything.

What You'll Need

Stof

  • 2 squares of fabric, each 20½" × 20½" (52 × 52 cm) — one for the pillow front, one for the pillow back Already have a decorative pillow front? You only need fabric for the back.
  • 1 strip of fabric, 20½" × 2" (52 × 5 cm) — this forms the lower edge of the pillow back

Notions

  • 1 zipper, 18" (45 cm) — nylon or polyester only; do not use a metal zipper
  • Zipper foot for your machine

Instructies

Step 1 — Sew the Back Pieces Together

With right sides facing, sew the large back piece and the narrow strip together using a ⅜" (1 cm) seam allowance. Stop sewing 1½" (4 cm) in from each end, leaving a gap in the centre for the zipper.

Press the entire seam open, including the unsewn section — fold and press those seam allowances back as if the seam were sewn all the way through.

simple pillowcase instruction is all you need to make wonderful home decor that can change a room completely.

Step 2 — Insert the Zipper

Turn the back piece right side up. Slide the zipper face-up underneath the pressed opening, centering it along the gap. Pin in place, then stitch the zipper down on both sides using your zipper foot.

Step 3 — Trim the Back to Size

Measure the completed back piece and trim it to match the size of your front piece exactly. Both pieces should be the same dimensions before you sew them together.

Step 4 — Open the Zipper

This step is easy to forget — don't skip it. Open the zipper halfway before sewing the front and back together. This gap is how you'll turn the pillowcase right side out at the end. If the zipper is fully closed, you won't be able to turn it.

Step 5 — Sew the Pillowcase Together

Pin the front and back pieces together, right sides facing. Sew all the way around the edges using a ⅜" (1 cm) seam allowance.

Reach through the zipper opening to turn the pillowcase right side out. Give it a good press to finish.

Tip: Clip or notch the corners before turning to reduce bulk and get sharper, crisper corners.
