Give a plain pillow a charming, handcrafted look using nothing more than your sewing machine, a button sewing foot, and a mix of buttons in different sizes. This technique is most often used for attaching buttons to garments and home décor, but it's equally brilliant as a decorative embellishment — as this sweet button heart pillow top proves!
Combining 2-hole and 4-hole buttons in a variety of sizes adds texture and visual interest. A video link is included in the steps below to walk you through the machine button-sewing process.

Instrukcje
Step 1 — Prepare the Pillow Top
- Draw a heart shape onto a sheet of paper and cut it out — this is your pattern template.
- Pin the heart template onto the right side of your pillow front fabric. Using a hand sewing needle and contrasting thread, baste around the edge of the heart. This stitched outline will serve as your guide for arranging the buttons.

Step 2 — Attach the Buttons by Machine
- Before you begin, watch the linked video for a full walkthrough on sewing buttons by machine. (Insert video link here.)
- Attach the Button Sewing Foot to your machine.

- Thread the top of the machine and the bobbin with your button-colored all-purpose thread.
- Place your first button inside the basted heart outline, positioning it where you'd like it to sit.
- Following the video guidelines, set your machine to zigzag stitch oraz disengage the feed teeth. Stitch the button in place, then tie off the thread ends to secure. Repeat until the entire heart shape is filled with buttons.
Tip: Vary the sizes and hole types as you go — mixing 2-hole and 4-hole buttons creates a more interesting, layered look.
Step 3 — Finish the Pillow
- Carefully remove the hand-basted heart outline.
- Change your thread to match the pillow fabric. Place the pillow front and back pieces together, right sides facing. Set your machine to straight stitch and sew around all four sides using a ½" seam allowance, leaving a gap large enough to insert the pillow form.
- Clip the corners to reduce bulk. Turn the pillow right side out, gently pushing out the corners. Insert the pillow form, then hand sew the opening closed to finish.
