Sew Many Quilt Block Designs — Explore the Quilt Block Wizard in Creativate

If you've been piecing quilt tops and are ready to take your quilting-in-the-hoop to the next level, the Quilt Block Wizard in Creativate Extra and Elite is worth exploring in depth. It's one of the most versatile design tools in the software — and once you understand what it can do, you'll find yourself reaching for it constantly.

Where to Find It

The Quilt Block Wizard is located in the Embroidery module → Create tab.

What It Does

The Wizard guides you through building custom embroidered quilt blocks step by step. Choose a block style, shape, and size — then customize the fill pattern to suit your project. You can even add seam allowances for true quilt-as-you-go construction, pre-quilting each block before joining them together.

Fill pattern options span seven categories, each with multiple settings: Stipple, Channel/Parallel, Diamond/Square/Crosshatch, Motif, Echo, Contour, and Shape — giving you an enormous range of quilting looks from a single tool.

Quilt Block Styles

Filled Quilt Block — Inner Embroidery

Adds quilting around an embroidered center design. Perfect for featuring a specific embroidery within a quilted block.

  • Choose from 9 block shapes and adjust the size to match your block
  • Use Cut Line to add a seam allowance for quilt-in-the-hoop, or leave it unchecked to embroider directly onto an already-pieced quilt
  • Load your center embroidery using Open Embroidery or paste from the Clipboard
  • Use Adjust Embroidery to fine-tune placement and scale

Example: Block Shape 1, no Cut Line. Embroidery: Iris Single from Samples. Margin 3mm. Fill Pattern: Shape, Shape 4, Density 40.

Outline Quilt Block — Filled Inner Shape

Quilts only the center shape, leaving the surrounding block unquilted. Creates a striking reverse trapunto effect where the center appears raised against a plain background.

Example: Block Style Shape 1, no Cut Line. Inner Shape 118. Fill Pattern: Shape Fill with Motifs, Shape 1, Density 25, Use Motif enabled. Motif: Husqvarna Viking, Category E Crafting Stitches, Pattern 13.

Filled Quilt Block — Outline Inner Shape

The reverse of the above — quilting fills the area around the center shape, leaving the center plain. The center appears to lift forward while the quilted background recedes.

Example: Block Style Shape 3. Inner Shape 1. Shape Fill, Density 20, Shape 4.

Filled Quilt Block — No Inner Shape

Fills the entire block with stippling or decorative stitching — ideal for plain blocks that need texture without a focal design.

Example: Block Style Shape 9. Fill Pattern: Stipple, Gap 3.5.

Outline Quilt Block — No Inner Shape

Defines the block outline only — no fill. Use this to secure the quilt front, batting, and backing together in a block shape, or to define areas in a whole cloth quilt.

Example: Block Style Shape 7.

Take It Further

The Quilt Block Wizard pairs beautifully with other Creativate tools. Try the Word Sculpt Wizard to fill a block shape with quilting-themed words for a truly personal touch — pick any shape from Shapes & Symbols and type in your own text. In the Platinum package, you can also create custom block shapes using Draw & Paint and link them directly into the Wizard.
