Prepare the Fabric Pieces

Cut the following pieces:

• 2 cotton fabric pieces: 8" × 7" (20.3 × 17.8 cm)
• 1 lightweight cotton batting piece: 8" × 7" (20.3 × 17.8 cm)

Prepare the Outer Fabric

Choose the cotton fabric you would like to use as the outer fabric of your sunglasses case.

Place the lightweight cotton batting on the wrong side of the outer fabric, aligning all edges. Secure the layers together with sewing clips or pins.

Quilt the Outer Fabric

No backstitching is required for this step. Quilt the outer fabric to the batting by sewing evenly spaced straight lines across the fabric in one direction, then repeat in the opposite direction to create a quilted pattern.

Use a standard straight stitch. For this project, the quilting lines are spaced approximately 2" apart (5.1 cm).

Attach the Patch

Position the patch on the right side of the quilted outer fabric. Place the patch on either the left or right half of the fabric, keeping it centered horizontally within that half and positioned slightly closer to the bottom edge.

Secure the patch with a pin or hold one edge in place with your fingertip as you begin sewing. Sew around the outside edge of the patch to attach it to the fabric.

Trim the Corner Edge

Place the remaining cotton fabric on top of the quilted outer fabric with the right sides facing together. Align all edges.

Trim one top corner to create a rounded edge for the opening. The rounded edge should begin approximately 3"–3½" (7.5–9 cm) down from the top edge.

Sew the Sunglasses Case

Using a ¼" (6 mm) seam allowance, sew around the outside edge of the sunglasses case with the good sides facing.

Begin at one side of the opening and sew around the case, stopping at the opposite side of the opening. Backstitch at the beginning and end.

Trim the Corners & Turn Right Side Out

Trim the corner seam allowances as close to the stitching as possible without cutting through your stitches.

Carefully turn the case right side out through the opening. Use a point turner or your finger to gently push the corners out.

Press & Topstitch

If available, press the case with an iron to flatten the seams. If you don't have an iron, gently roll the seam between your fingers to help the edges lie flat.

Fold the raw edges of the opening inward so they are even with the sewn seam.

Sew the Side Seam

Fold the sunglasses case in half lengthwise, matching the bottom corners. Secure the layers with sewing clips or pins.

Increase the stitch length to approximately 3–3.5.

Starting at the curved opening side, sew down the side and around the bottom edge. Sew close to the outer edge, following or sewing directly over your existing topstitch whenever possible.

Backstitch at the beginning and end.
